Bosun Meg
Meg started in the industry at the bottom, cleaning cabins and scrubbing decks. She worked her way up the hard way, learning by doing, and earned her place as Bosun on 50-metre vessels.
There, she oversaw daily maintenance schedules, led the deck crew, managed refit projects during shipyard periods, and implemented large-scale operational plans. She was the one making sure what the officers planned actually got done, on time, to standard, and with the crew working to extremely high standards under her guidance.
A very important position within Skipper Training NZ
As Bosun at Skipper Training NZ, she’s responsible for the vessels, gear, and safety systems. She oversees the maintenance of all our vessels, from general wear and tear to scheduled servicing. Whether it’s swapping out filters, sorting hydraulic leaks, greasing bearings, or just knowing when something “doesn’t sound right,” she’s across it. She also manages our engineering trailer, yard, and our new facilities at 85 Vickerman Street, keeping everything stocked, serviced, and running smoothly. She’s also in charge of all safety equipment: lifejackets, lifebuoys, extinguishers, EPRIBs, survival suits, you name it, she ensures it’s checked, certified, and logged. She also manages the building- and vessel’s H&S systems, writes procedures, and keeps documentation up to spec across the board.
Getting the job done
Coming up through the hawsepipe means she knows the job and the people who do it. What sets Meg apart is her no-nonsense, solutions-focused approach. She’s all about getting stuck in, finding the fix, and making sure it stays fixed. That approach has earned her respect from crews and captains alike. We couldn’t be more stoked to have her running the deck at Skipper Training NZ.
