Skipper Training NZ is Excited to Welcome Phil Bishop, One of The Best Maritime Educators in Australasia
After 25 years in the Royal New Zealand Navy, Phil Bishop has joined Skipper Training NZ as the new Training Manager. He brings a wealth of experience as both an educator and leader in maritime training.
One of Phil’s standout roles in the Navy was as a Training Development Officer for the Navy’s Weapon Engineering School. Training in that kind of high-pressure, highly technical environment requires an exceptional educator—someone with a rare combination of precision, patience, and expertise. Someone like Phil.
A Proven Leader in Maritime Education
For the past 10 years, Phil’s role in the navy has been on developing leadership and seamanship skills. He’s been instrumental in shaping programs that prepare individuals to perform in real-world maritime conditions. His commitment to helping people grow goes beyond just teaching skills. Phil’s focus is on meaningful development—building confidence, capability, and readiness for the challenges of the sea.
Milo, co-founder of Skipper Training NZ, has worked with Phil on various projects over the past six years, including the hugely popular Advanced Sea Survival program
“Phil is one of the best maritime trainers in Australasia,” Milo says. “Having him on board full time will help us take our training to the next level.”
Committed to Real-World Results
Phil doesn’t just teach for the sake of passing exams. His approach is practical and grounded in the realities of maritime work. Whether it’s designing programs, running drills, or conducting evaluations, he ensures students leave with skills they can rely on in high-stakes situations.
A New Chapter in Nelson
To take on this new role, Phil and his wife, along with their 2 younger kids, are relocating from Auckland to Nelson. It’s a move that marks an exciting chapter for both Phil and Skipper Training NZ. Milo is excited to have him on board, saying
“Phil’s leadership and expertise are already strengthening our programs, and we’re proud to have him join us.”
Looking Ahead
With his vast experience, Phil’s impact on maritime training is clear. His teaching methods, leadership skills, and ability to develop top-tier programs make him an invaluable addition to Skipper Training NZ. Whether you’re new to the industry or looking to sharpen your skills, Phil’s presence here means better training, stronger outcomes, and more confident mariners.
