What You Can Do
With this certificate, you can work as an engineer in the following sea areas:
- Fishing, Passenger and non-passenger ships up to 3000 kW (with restrictions) – enclosed
- Passenger ships up to 750 kW (with restrictions) – inshore
- Non‑passenger ships under 24 m any power (with restrictions) – coastal
- Fishing vessels under 24 m any power (with restrictions) – offshore
- Second Engineer on fishing ship under 750kW – unlimited
Requirements
- 200 hours relevant sea service
- Meet Maritime NZ requirements (Fit & Proper, medical, 18+ years old, First Aid, etc)

We deliver the New Zealand Certificate in Marine Engineering Class 6 (Level 4) programme approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under section 439 of the Education and Training Act 2020, and Skipper Training NZ Ltd is accredited to provide it under the section 441 of the Education and Training Act.
