New Zealand Certificate in Marine Engineering Class 5 (Level 5)

What You Can Do

With this certificate, you can work as an engineer in the following sea areas:

  • Non‑passenger ships any propulsion power – restricted limits
  • Passenger and Fishing ships up to 3000 kW with restrictions – inshore
  • Passenger ships under 24 m any power – coastal
  • Non‑passenger ships under 24 m any propulsion power – offshore
  • Second Engineer on fishing ships any propulsion – unlimited

Requirements

  • Sea Service (in the past 5 years)
    • 1 year engineering sea service while holding MEC 6, or
    • 2 years engineering sea service without first holding MEC 6, Or
    • 1 year + 200 hours engineering sea service plus Training Record Book*
  • STCW Basic Safety ancillaries if required
  • Meet Maritime NZ requirements (Fit & Proper, medical, 18+ years old, First Aid, etc)
